SUMMER CAMP | SESSION 2

Performance Intensive 

Underrated Shakespeare | July 9-20, 2018


​THE BEST OF THE BARD’S DEEP CUTS

Create an original Shakespeare performance! Collaborate with top Twin Cities theatre professionals to develop, design and perform an original showcase taken from Shakespeare’s works that are often forgotten in the blare of his “greatest hits.”

During this two-week summer camp, students will train with working professionals in acting, text analysis, voice/movement and theatrical design and learn to make compelling and dynamic choices both onstage and behind the scenes. ​

Forget Hamlet, meet Pericles. Broaden your knowledge of the canon in this advanced summer intensive featuring the best selections from Shakespeare’s b-sides.

SUMMER 2018 | WEEKEND EVENT

Join us on the road! 

SYT @ Great River Shakespeare Festival 

July 28-29, 2018

We’re teaming up with the folks at Great River Shakespeare Festival to offer two exclusive packages for students and alumni to join us for a weekend and the festival! 

WEEKEND TRIP (Package 1)
​Join SYT for a roadtrip and overnight down in Winona to soak up a weekend jam-packed with workshops, master classes, performances, and talkbacks. We will leave early Saturday morning and return on Sunday evening. Housing in the Winona State University dormitories is included.
Students/Alumni who are 18 or older may use this opportunity to audition for GRSF’s 2019 Apprentice Company. We encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity, and contact us at SYT if you would like support to prepare an audition monologue!

​DAY TRIP (Package 2)
Skip the overnight but get in on some of the weekend’s unique opportunities, including two GRSF shows, a private event exclusively for SYT students, and an opportunity to meet and talk with GRSF artists.

Summer Shakespeare Workout | June 18-22


PHYSICAL ACTING AND ESSENTIAL SKILLS TRAINING

Not for the faint of heart! Strengthen your creative voice as you develop foundational skills and techniques to boost your acting chops and take on some of Shakespeare’s most visceral and acrobatic language. Up your stage combat game with Twin Cities fight director Annie Enneking and discover vocal techniques and movement exercises that help you get the most out of Shakespeare’s language in this fun and physical summer camp.

Fantastic for seasoned Shakespeareans and beginners alike, this workshop will set you up with all you need to analyze the text and get the most out of each line.

​MASTERING THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SHAKESPEARE’S LANGUAGE

Know your iamb from your spondee? Let’s find out.
Master some of the most important linguistic tools and tricks in this hands-on crash course on the fundamentals of acting Shakespeare’s language. In this text-focused workshop, students will discover how Shakespeare offers acting advice through his writing and how to apply that advice in performance. ​

Fantastic for both seasoned Shakespeareans and beginners alike, this workshop will set you up with all you need to analyze the text and get the most out of each line.

SPRING WORKSHOP | Session 1

Directing Shakespeare | April 18-27, 2018

Delve into the essential elements of staging Shakespeare with acclaimed Twin Cities director and SYT teaching artist Craig Johnson.  This workshop focuses on building foundational skills and acquiring practical tools to help you:

  • develop your own creative eye and directing style
  • create dynamic stage pictures for clear, compelling storytelling
  • communicate with actors and create a collaborative working environment
  • analyze Shakespeare’s text to discover the clues he left behind ​
  • use your new skills to direct your interpretation of a Shakespeare scene
  • support your fellow classmates by acting in their scene​

All students will have the opportunity to showcase their scenes in a final performance.

Please note that some outside rehearsals will be required.

Summer Performance Intensive

Hone your acting skills, strengthen your grasp of Shakespeare’s language, and awaken your interpretive vision all while collaborating with top theater professionals to develop, design and perform an original showcase featuring some of Shakespeare’s most iconic scenes and characters. During this two-week summer camp, you will train with working professionals in acting, text analysis, voice/movement and scenic design and learn to make compelling and dynamic choices both onstage and behind the scenes.

Summer Skills Training

Delve into essential techniques for acting Shakespeare and creating powering and compelling characters in this exciting two-week camp. Over the course of two weeks, you will:

  • Explore Shakespeare’s language and characters through voice and movement.
  • Develop fundamental acting skills.
  • Learn armed and unarmed stage combat techniques from award-winning fight choreographer Annie Enneking.
  • Refine and strengthen your creative voice.
  • Unravel Shakespeare’s language through text analysis and character study.

Days: June 12th-16th & June 19th – 23rd, 2017

Choreographing Fight Scene

Stage Violence and Physical Storytelling

Join award-winning fight choreographer Annie Enneking and SYT artistic director Logan Verdoorn for this workshop aimed at understanding and staging Shakespeare’s violence. Through physical exploration, scene study and stage combat training, students will explore the concept of body logic, discover techniques to making dynamic and compelling choices onstage, and develop physical specificity and vocal clarity to create electricity between characters and audience.​

All experiences levels welcome and encouraged to join!

Sound Design for Actors

​From creepy off-stage effects and soaring musical scores to the tapping of the actors’ shoes on the stage, sound design is crucial in building the atmosphere of the play. In this exciting new SYT workshop, you will explore and develop new skills that will expand your technical savvy, strengthen your interpretive abilities, and improve your awareness as a performer. Each day you will be introduced to a new element in sound design technique and then put those new skills to practice by designing and engineering an original soundscape to accompany an iconic scene from Shakespeare.

All experiences levels welcome and encouraged to join!

Shakespeare's Combat

Shakespeare and Stage Combat

With Annie Enneking, Leif Jurgensen, and Logan Verdoorn

August 15-19, 2016
Join Annie, Leif and Logan for this exciting look into some of Shakespeare’s most intense and action-packed scenes. Work with award-winning choreographer Annie Enneking on stage combat and choreography techniques to effectively (and safely!) design your own fight. Learn how to mine the text for clues on how to best tell the story of the scene and gain insights into the physical life of your character. Students will work together on a Shakespeare scene, hone their stage combat skills, and build characters through an understand of the text and physical specificity.
